They aren’t a direct comparison, as the Trek has an Ultegra rear derailleur and the Synapse a 105, but the MSRP price difference is about $600. Is there anything else that would justify the big diff in price? I could get the Synapse Carbon 5 for only $200 more than the Trek 2.3, and I thought carbon was supposed to be way more than aluminum.
