I am looking into buying a new bike that i can ride every day as well as long long distances….like travel across a few states with it…not a racer a cyclocross bike…..i have 2 that are in my price range and that i really really like and think are decent…….please only choose one or the other and offer comment on why and how one is better…..if you are experienced and answering honestly and know your stuff i would consider another bike recommendation but i still want to hear what an experienced person has to say about these bikes and what is better about one or the other and comment please on the companys history and reputation…..im inexperienced and just really gettin into this and i want to start off on the right foot and not get taken at some bike shop that wants to sell me the most expensive pile of **** they can…..thanks……..here they are…Motobecane fantom cross or a surly crosscheck complete.
i also realized that these bikes dont have pedals…..i am a beginner with this style of bike and dont really understand that….do i have to buy seperate pedals…or shoes or something….i still want to be able to wear regular tennis shoes or cross training shoes will that be possible with these bikes. OH and over long distances will the seats be comfortable im not sure those skinny little seats look very comfortable if they are how are you supposed to sit on them….i feel like over distances and bumps it would start to hurt…….here are links to the bikes too http://www.motobecane.com/MBUSAftc.html and http://www.surlybikes.com/crosscheck_comp.html
Also, ( i know there is like 153 questions in here but im learning) if you say something general like you need to have a bike that fits you and its body preferance and some kind of lame answer like that please tell me what exactly i should be looking for in a good bike and recomend bikes in this 7 to 900 dollar range thank you.

Which is best buy? Trek 2.3 or Cannondale Synapse 5?

I’m comparison shopping online, and am wondering which of these bikes is the best buy. They aren’t a direct comparison, as the Trek has an Ultegra rear derailleur and the Synapse a 105, but the MSRP price difference is about $600. Is there anything else that would justify the big diff in price? I could get the Synapse Carbon 5 for only $200 more than the Trek 2.3, and I thought carbon was supposed to be way more than aluminum.
