Price Comparison – Getting the Best Deal

Dominik Macinger asked:

When it comes to the things we buy, we are always concerned about its cost regardless of the product. For those whose money is always in short supply, getting a lower price means you can buy more with the same amount of money. Even those who have lots of money, there is some sort of pleasure in knowing that you got a lot of bang for your buck. Although the items that you are looking at may be the same, some sellers and retail outlets might be willing to accept a lower profit to entice buyers and sell more. This is why you can save a lot of money if you are willing to get a proper price comparison.

But there is a lot of effort that is needed in order to get some price comparisons. If you are just buying items in the grocery, it might just be as easy as going across the aisle. But for other, more expensive items, you might need to go from store to store or maybe even from one mall to another. This is very tiring and can even cost you more in gas money if you fail to find anything cheaper than what you had at first. Because of this, you need to be wise enough to decide whether you can still realistically get a lower price or if it’s the best that you can get.

Shopping on the internet, getting a price comparison is as easy as it can be. You can go from store to store with just a simple click of the mouse. All you have to know is which web sites can deliver items to your location or those that have local retail outlets in your area. You also need to consider whether the web site that you are looking at is the real deal or not. You are ensured of an online store’s validity if they have an actual retail outlet somewhere. In the case of online stores that do not have retail outlets, you should ask around about its integrity. A store that has been around for a long time is more likely to be a real store and not a scam. You should also ask the people you know whether they have bought something from that online store or not. Just so you know that the store actually delivers the items. Getting a price comparison from online stores only takes a few minutes and no effort at all, you should therefore exhaust all possible sources in order to find the best price or the best deal.

A price comparison can sometimes be not enough to indicate which the better buy is. There can be a few perks or drawbacks that you need to consider in order getting more accurate quantification of its value. Some stores might offer free shipping or other freebies that can make their items more desirable over the cheaper offerings of their competitors. Some companies might also provide a much shorter warranty period to compensate for the lower price. With warranties, you are actually gambling. If your device lasts longer than the more expensive items warranty, then it’s worth it. If it doesn’t, then you did not get your money’s worth.

Getting the right price comparison is not as easy as comparing the price of one to the other. You should also be able to put a value to things that are not included in the price. A lower price doesn’t always guarantee that you are getting the best deal.

Importance of Comparison Shopping

Most major products and services come with a range of prices. Shop around and there’s a good chance you’ll uncover a lower price for the exact item or service you’re looking for. By comparison shopping, you get what you want for less and more money stays in your pocket. And it takes maybe 15 or 20 minutes of your time.

Next time you’re tempted to rush out and make a major purchase, think about the cash you could save with just a few minutes of research. The fact is that shopping around for most products will yield savings far greater than 10 percent. And while it’s possible to comparison shop on everything you buy, there’s no need to go overboard.

Start by taking a close look at core expenses that you pay every month such as long distance phone calls, gasoline, food, and insurance premiums. By comparing the prices, you stand to save a lot of money. Saving money on core expenses frees up more money to be kept as an emergency fund or to pay for something like a vacation.

The Internet makes it easy to comparison shop for almost everything travel-related including airline tickets, car rentals, hotel rooms, cruises and resort packages. Be sure to visit multiple sites for price quotes and information. The Internet is also a great resource when shopping for a new vehicle. Incentives and new and used car pricing information may vary from site to site so be sure to visit several. When in doubt, contact an auto manufacturer directly. And don’t forget to shop around for your auto loan.

It’s better to have an auto loan ready to go before you go to a dealership. That way if a dealer wants your financing business, he will have to offer you the best rate better than the one you’ve found on your own. And even if your intention is nothing more than a color TV, you’ll still want to do a lot of research before buying.

Comparing prices at national discount chains is a good initial step. But don’t overlook local retailers. A local electronics retailer may have the best prices around. Wherever you shop, don’t be afraid to ask for a better deal than the ticketed price. Try your luck. You will be amazed at the number of better offers you will receive. In many establishments, salespeople have permission to offer a cheaper price for things. You will have to ask or bargain for it.

Decline of Comparison Shopping Engines

Jasmeet Sawhney asked:

Comparison shopping or ability to compare prices was (and to a large extent continues to be) one of the greatest innovations since the advent of internet shopping. Why? Because it put shoppers in control of the single most important shopping insight – ability to find the best price. So, understandably, comparison shopping engines (CSEs) were once a rage. But, they are constantly losing their clout with advent of new technologies and pressure from players like Google and Amazon. Here are some of the factors that are taking away CSE traffic:

Search engines are investing on their own shopping platforms – Google and Bing continue to evolve their own product search platforms. In addition to standard product information, they are enriching product pages with content like product reviews, videos and related products. There is a clear conflict of interest when it comes to product related search results. And, guess who wins? It is definitely not CSEs.

Amazon marketplace – This may come in as a surprise since we are talking about comparison shopping. But, Amazon Product Ads drives more than 4% of CSE traffic and it is growing at a good pace. For most categories, traffic from Amazon is very high quality with high conversion rates.

Social Media and Mobile – All of us know how social and mobile technologies are changing our lives. They impact all aspects of digital landscape and online shopping is no different. This is just the beginning – traffic from social and mobile platforms will explode in the next 5 years.

Ability to comparison shop on online retail sites – This is slowly becoming the new hygiene factor for online retail sites. Most of the big retailers already offer this feature. But, I highly doubt that shoppers can be fooled for too long. It is not difficult to discover that almost all prices from competitor sites are either higher or within 98% of the price listed on the site offering this feature.

It is clear that comparison shopping engines are under a lot of pressure trying to keep their market share. But, there are some bright spots as well. The second generation CSEs are fairing much better and continue to grow at the expense of their older counterparts. In the next post, we’ll discuss how CSEs have evolved and what newer entrants are doing to grow their traffic.

Who knows tomorrow’s science and technology may even bring to your doorstep instantly the products you order during online shopping – just as in the Gene Roddenberry’s STAR TREK when products and humans could be teleported. Don’t forget price comparison and comparison shopping being left to your computer to decide for you! Yet another innovation in tomorrow’s world could probably be that, in this age of visualizations of the virtual world, the next generation could at a click of a button enter into a virtual mall which is a replica of the original when you could navigate virtually through (without being stamped, pushed or even kicked!)

All said and done, if such a thing does happen at all, the valuable human element, rapport and that personal touch would become a missing element. Considering, however, the advantages, the online shopping is sure to continue increasing in popularity. Why delay? Start comparison shopping online now.
